“What are some of your strengths?”Oh, we LOVE this question! For most of us, this is our favorite topic, and an easy one we practice when preparing for interviews. We know the answer to this. We have rehearsed it because, we want this job. We came this far, got a face-to-face, and now we are here to IMPRESS!

“What are some of your weaknesses?”

Oof. Ok, what do we come up with here? We also have rehearsed this one. We want to be honest. But not THAT honest. We want to show weakness. Yeah, but not be so weak they won’t hire us. We want to be strong as a team player, a leader, oh and also a follower. We want to be great at the big picture, but also the details. We want to be great at working in the unknown, but we also need clear expectations.

Here’s the trick: talk about a weakness you have recognized, the steps you are taking to correct it, and how you have seen that change your team for the good.

Honesty and self-awareness is refreshing to hiring managers. Pretending to be all things to all people is not. Plus, say you get the job by being superhuman. Soon enough, your superhero cape will come off pretty quickly. And no one wants that, right?
